What is a VPN and Why do you need a VPN for Routers?

Every time you connect to the internet, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the websites that you visit collect your information. This means your connection is also exposed to hackers, and if a website gets taken down, your personal information could get taken down with it.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) puts a stop to this by masking your IP address and hiding your online activity. It does this by routing your connection through an encrypted tunnel, connecting your devices to private servers rather than the ones offered by your ISP.

Installing a VPN onto your router is the easiest way to protect every device in your home, as any devices going through your router automatically connect to the VPN at the same time.

Check if Your Router has DD-WRT or Tomato Firmware on it

DD-WRT is Linux-based firmware that enhances the performance and features of your router by supporting the installation of VPN software. Similarly, Tomato Firmware also supports additional upgrades on your router, allowing you to install native VPN apps.

To install the software onto your router, it must run DD-WRT or Tomato Firmware. Thankfully, you can install these onto most modern devices, but if you fancy saving yourself the hassle, you can just buy a pre-flashed router from one of the top providers on this list.

Speed and Security are Key Factors When Choosing a VPN For Routers

As your VPN-compatible router will be supporting multiple connections at once, you don’t want any software you’re installing onto it to slow down your connection speeds. Choosing a VPN with bespoke router apps will help deliver the fastest speeds.

If you live in a household with a large number of internet users, powerful security features are essential to keep every device protected. Hackers can exploit the software on routers just like any other device, and advanced security features will help protect your router from any malicious behavior and keep your connected devices safe as a result.

Which VPN is the Fastest and Most Secure for Routers?

ExpressVPN has got the best reputation for compatibility and ease-of-use, and as a result, our researchers found it delivers the fastest and most secure connections when installed onto routers.

How to Set Up a VPN On Your Router

Set-up instructions can vary depending on which router and VPN service you’re using, but these base instructions should serve as a good guide.

  1. Log into your router’s settings, usually by typing your IP address into your internet browser
  2. Now, you’ll need to configure it. Many routers have integrated VPN functionality, others you’ll need to set up the VPN manually. Please consult your router’s specific instructions for installation at this stage.
  3. Once your VPN is installed, all you’ll need to do is test it. Make sure you’ve got a native app installed onto the device of your choice so you can control the settings (desktop is best). The easiest way to check if it’s working or not is by switching your server location to a different country and accessing the homepage of a VPN provider such as Nord or ExpressVPN, which usually display your location information. If you’ve fooled a VPN provider, you can fool anyone!

Do Routers Come With VPNs Built-In?

Some VPN providers, such as NordVPN and ExpressVPN, sell pre-flashed routers with their VPN software already installed. All you’ll need to do is take out a subscription, purchase the router, and then set it up using a native desktop app.

What to Consider When Choosing a VPN For Routers

Compatibility should be your biggest focus when you’re choosing a VPN for routers, but there are lots of other features you should be looking out for too.

Powerful Security and Privacy Features

VPNs are popular with internet users that don’t want their ISP to keep track of what they’re doing online. Military-grade encryption and IP masking will help protect any devices that are connected to your router, while additional features such as a kill switch, DNS/IPv6 and Web RTC leak protection will keep your identity hidden. Always prioritize providers that operate with a strict no-logging policy, as you can trust them to store your personal information safely.

Quality Network of Servers

If you’ve got a video game console or Smart TV, you can connect these to your VPN through your router. Doing so will let you access region-locked content on streaming apps through your Smart TV or save money on the latest gaming discounts on the Xbox Marketplace and PlayStation Store. As long as they’re privately owned and optimized for top performance, the more servers your VPN can offer, the better.

Great App Support

One of the biggest drawbacks of using a VPN on your router is you can’t control it directly, so you’ll need to download a native app onto one of your devices. How you control your VPN through your router is up to you. You can use your cell phone, tablet or desktop, as long as your provider has native apps for those platforms. If you spend most of your time on desktop computers, choose a service with a fantastic desktop app. Vice versa for mobile devices.

The 10 Best VPNs : Full Overview

Written By: Adam Dagan

1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is simply the best VPN for routers, with its own custom firmware that makes connecting to the VPN and protecting all of the devices that you own as simple as it should be. It offers a wide selection of pre-flashed routers, but its VPN software can also be easily installed by following the DD-WRT tutorial on its website. ExpressVPN is also one of the best for unblocking websites and streaming apps, as its MediaStreamer feature lets you unblock Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer from devices that don’t support VPNs.

It’s based in the British Virgin Islands, so it has one of the strictest privacy policies around as it doesn’t fall within the five-eyes, nine-eyes or 14-eyes jurisdictions. Its TrustedServer, RAM-based technology expands on these privacy features and guarantees complete anonymity when you’re connected to its servers. ExpressVPN couldn’t be any easier to set up on routers, but if you do have any issues, its award-winning customer service team is available 24/7/365. P2P activity is fully supported on select servers.

Bottom Line

It’s no surprise that the most trusted and reliable VPN is also the best choice for routers, offering a fantastic level of support for every device that’s out there. This provider came out top in our researchers’ speed and security tests too, so if you’re looking for a quality router VPN that won’t let you down, ExpressVPN is it.

2. NordVPN

NordVPN is just as easy to set up on your router as the website is full of tutorials, but there’s also a wide selection of pre-flashed routers if you fancy saving some time (but not money – these routers are expensive!). We tested cell phones and desktop computers once the VPN was installed onto our router, and connection speeds were impressive across the board – fast enough to support streaming in Ultra HD on Netflix without any lag or buffering.

In terms of security features, there’s plenty to keep every device in your household safe as long as it’s connected to the router’s VPN software. Military-grade encryption is included as standard, and there’s a useful double VPN feature for added protection. Onion over VPN offers the ultimate private browsing experience while the CyberSec security suite automatically blocks ads, suspicious websites, and any malware attempts made on your devices. At the time of writing, a three-year plan works out at just $2.99 a month, making NordVPN one of the cheaper options on the market if you’re willing to commit (and there’s no reason not to).

3. IPVanish VPN

The choice is yours when it comes to IPVanish: simply buy a pre-flashed router from its website with everything you need to hit the ground running, or dive into one of its many tutorials to learn how to set up its VPN software on a router with DD-WRT firmware of your choice. OpenVPN and PPTP protocols are supported on the router along with a choice of 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption (go for the latter). Download speeds are excellent, and IPVanish’s network can unblock the likes of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Hulu from most of its servers.

As it operates with a no-logging policy, you can trust IPVanish to safely process your personal information, and it gets top marks for privacy with the addition of DNS and IPv6 leak protection. What impresses us most about IPVanish is the amount of support that’s available directly through its website for anyone that wants to manually install the software onto the router. Seriously, just take a look here. The provider’s gone out of its way to provide all of the information you could ever need and then more, and we seriously respect that.

Not Recommended for... While IPVanish is a fantastic choice for a router VPN, its prices are a lot more expensive than its competitors.

Bottom Line

If you fancy manually installing the IPVanish’s VPN software onto your router yourself, IPVanish is probably the best out there, providing you with all the support you could need to customize your router with bespoke security options. That said, there are definitely cheaper options.

4. Windscribe VPN

Surfshark swims fast enough for lag-free streaming on any app, whether that’s Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, or Disney+. As its network covers over 1700 servers in 63 countries, you won’t have any issues unblocking region-locked content, either. There’s a strict no-logging policy, so Surfshark doesn’t track, store, or monitor your browsing history on Chrome or Firefox, and its CleanWeb feature will make those annoying browser ads a thing of the past.

One of the best things about your Surfshark subscription is it lets you protect an unlimited number of devices, so you can use it on your cell phone, Smart TV, or any other devices you have in your home without shelling out extra. The MultiHop mode takes ID protection and footprint masking to a whole new level and military-grade encryption scrambles the information you’re transferring to make it unusable should it ever fall into the hands of hackers.

Works with

Key Features

Available On: Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, ESPN, and more.
Data logging Strict no-logging policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers Over 179
Top download speed reached 86Mbps
VPN locations 63 countries
Maximum devices supported Unlimited
Plans Free, build-a-plan, one month and annual plans
24/7 live chat Yes

Unlimited connections, perfect for larger households.

Speed

Not Recommended for... Windscribe isn’t the best VPN for unblocking websites and has slower speeds than most other providers in server locations outside of the US.

Bottom Line

As it uses the OpenVPN protocol and utilizes AES 256-bit encryption, Windscribe is a great VPN choice for routers. It’s easy to set up, and though the provider doesn’t sell pre-flashed routers, manual configuration isn’t too difficult if you follow the setup instructions on the website here

5. VyprVPN

VyprVPN is so compatible with routers that it has its own ‘Router App,’ a unique plug-in that adds valuable features such as easy server switching and split tunneling, but you’ll need a router that’s compatible with Tomato Framework to use it. DD-WRT routers are still fully supported, though, and can be easily installed with VyprVPN’s VPN software by following the handy configuration guides on the website.

So, what about speed and security features? VyprVPN comes with unlimited bandwidth and our researchers didn’t have any issues using it to unblock websites or streaming apps, and security features such as AES 256-bit encryption and DNS leak protection kept their IP addresses hidden when they were streaming. Customer support is excellent and available 24/7, so if you do have any issues, the team can quickly put them right.

Works with

Key Features

Available On: Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, ITV Player, Hulu, and more.
Data logging No-logging policy
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Number of servers Over 700
Top download speed reached 77Mbps
VPN locations Over 70 countries
Maximum devices supported Up to five simultaneous connections
Plans one month, 12-month and two-year plans
24/7 live chat Yes

Offers its own ‘Router App’ for easy server switching.

Speed

Not Recommended for... VyprVPN’s parent company is GoldenFrog, one of the most trusted tech security providers in the world. Though this is great news for your privacy, it means GoldenFrog respects copyright law, and P2P activity isn’t supported as a result.

Bottom Line

With a wide selection of protocols, over 200,000 available IP addresses and easy-to-use apps for desktop, iOS, Mac and Android, VyprVPN is a solid choice for routers that’s sly enough to slither past geoblocks and strong enough to sink its fangs into any malware attacks made on your devices.

6. Encrypt Me VPN

Formerly known as Buffer VPN, Encrypt Me VPN is a quality option for routers that delivers consistently fast connection speeds and impressive performance. You can flash a compatible DD-WRT router at home yourself by following the instructions on its website or with one that has Encrypt Me software already installed. It uses the OpenVPN protocol with military-grade encryption to protect an unlimited number of devices, and speeds are fast enough to support HD streaming and even Ultra HD streaming on Netflix.

That said, our researchers didn’t have much luck using Encrypt Me to access region-locked content and were unable to access Netflix in locations outside of the US. It’s still a powerful VPN capable of delivering fast speeds, though, and its in-depth configuration makes it a great choice for routers.

Works with

A generous 30-day money-back guarantee and low-latency connections make Encrypt Me a great choice for a router VPN. It operates with a no-logging policy and has all of the security features and protocols you could need to protect your devices online, but you can’t rely on it to unblock the biggest streaming apps.

7. CyberGhost VPN

CyberGhost doesn’t sell pre-flashed routers but it couldn’t provide any more information on how to install its software onto DD-WRT or Tomato routers. Everything you could possibly need is listed here, and once you’ve got CyberGhost up and running, any devices that are connected to your router will be protected with the strongest AES 256-bit encryption, DNS and IPv6 leak protection and an automatic killswitch. And with over 6300 servers to connect to, CyberGhost can sneak past the geoblocks that are used by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video completely undetected.

This VPN delivered impressive results in our speed tests, and connections were strong and fast enough to support streaming in Ultra HD without any lag, which we put down to the fact that many of its servers are optimized for streaming, as well as online gaming and P2P activity. There’s a no-logging policy in place for guaranteed privacy, and a generous 45-day money-back guarantee which shows CyberGhost is confident that you’re going to love it.

8. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access (PIA) works with DD-WRT, Tomato and pFsense compatible routers and offers excellent privacy and security. You’ll find all of the information you need to set it up on your router here, but as the set-up instructions are so easily explained, you shouldn’t have any issues figuring out. PIA is an excellent choice for anyone working to a budget, as its prices plummet to just $3.33 per month when you take out a two-year subscription plan, which also includes an additional two months for free as well as a Cloud security license.

PIA is pretty useful at unblocking websites and streaming apps. Our researchers were able to stream Netflix in the UK, France, and Sweden while they were connected using the app, and connection speeds were strong enough to avoid any issues with lag or buffering. PIA doesn’t store logs and as there are over 12,400 servers to connect to, you’ll never have to worry about your online activity being revealed, especially with military-grade encryption and DNS leak protection looking after you.

9. HMA VPN

yourself by following the instructions on its website here. There are lots of reasons to like HMA! VPN outside of its cheeky name. With servers in over 190 countries, it’s a great choice for online gaming, as all of those locations can help improve your connectivity depending on the location of your game’s servers. As all subscriptions include AES 256-bit encryption, an automatic kill switch and DNS leak protection, your privacy is always fully protected.

There’s a useful split tunneling feature that lets you choose which devices use your VPN when they’re connected to the internet. Plus, a relatively new feature that’s been introduced since the name change is IP Shuffle, which automatically changes your IP address every couple of minutes for maximum privacy. While one subscription only supports five simultaneous connections, your router only counts for one of these, so it’s essentially unlimited.

With AES 256-bit encryption, your data is secure regardless of which network you’re using, and as the provider operates with a zero no-logging policy, you can trust it with your personal information. Additional Insights and FAQs

Configuring a VPN Router

The following steps serve as a guideline for configuring a VPN that supports the software but doesn’t have it installed.

A router can be made VPN capable by installing free DD-WRT, Tomato or OpenWRT software. DD-WRT is often the easiest option, and you can click here to see if your router is supported.
Once you’ve done this, download the bin files for your specific model.
Find out your router’s IP address, which is different for every brand. Usually, your IP address should be displayed in the Default Gateway section in your Settings.
Access your router by typing in the IP address into your URL.
Find the firmware install page, which is usually located under Administration.
Upload the DD-WRT bin file and hit accept.
Create a username and password by typing in the new default DD-WRT IP address into your URL: 192.168.1.1.
Make sure your router connects to the internet and prepare it for VPN installation by heading to the tab under services and clicking Start Open VPN Client.
Follow your VPN client’s instructions to install the software and you’re all set!

Are VPNs Legal on Routers?

VPN rules can change depending on location. Though VPNs are perfectly legal in most Western countries, usage is illegal in countries with strict internet censorship. Make sure you’ve read up on the rules in your country so you don’t fall foul of the law.

Will These VPNs Run on Different Routers?

All of the VPNs we’ve included in this list will run on any routers that support DD-WRT, Tomato, or Open-WRT software.

Popular VPNs That Don’t Work With Routers

Any VPN software can be installed onto routers, which means the only ones that won’t work with routers are the ones that only offer browser-based or mobile services.

Can People Detect My VPN On a Router?

Once your VPN is installed onto your router, all of the devices in your household will be anonymous. Not even your ISP will know.

Can You Trust Your VPN Service?

Check to see if your provider operates with a no-logging policy. This means it won’t track, store, or share any information that could be used to reveal your identity. You should also check if this policy is independently audited, and take time to read through your VPN provider’s privacy policy to see how transparent it is about how it processes personal information.

Can You Use Free VPNs For Your Router?

There’s an abundance of free VPN services that cause your router and any connected devices more harm than good. This is because free VPNs have to make their money by selling their users’ information rather than collecting monthly subscription fees, which means your data is getting thrown out into the wild. If that falls into the hands of hackers (and it often does) your devices and any associated accounts could be easily exploited.

Does Your Router Not Work With Your VPN? Try These Methods

Setup instructions vary significantly depending on the brand of router you’re using and your VPN service. As there are many steps along the way, make sure you’ve followed each of these carefully, but please contact your provider for specific troubleshooting issues.

Summary

Installing VPN software onto your router is one of the easiest and most effective ways of improving the security of every single internet-connected device in your home. You’ll be able to access region-locked apps and websites, stream films and TV shows from all over the world, and encrypt your valuable data to protect it from hackers. With so many internet cowboys out there in the World Wide West (see what we did there), a VPN is the most powerful tool you can use to keep them at bay.
